Commercial software tool used to make videos.

 

 

clickbank (aka CB)

A web site that joins product creators with affiliate marketers.  You can either list a product for sale there, or find products you can sell for a commission.

The number of visitors/viewers who actually become customers

 

 

copy writing

Most often used to refer to sales page contents, this term applies to anything produced for purposes of advertisement.  Includes written, audio, visual, and other potential means of conveying your advertisement to potential customers

 

 

c panel

A common interface use by web hosting providers to make it easier for subscribers to manage their domains.

 

 

CPA

Click per action; an advertising system where sites that host the ads are paid not for each click but for each purchase/desired action that results from each click

CPC

Cost per click; an advertising program where a price is paid each time a person clicks on one of your advertisements

 

 

CSS

cascading style sheet; used in conjunction with html or PHP to create a consistent look across the pages of a web site or blog

dedicated hosting

Your hosting provider is providing you with a server that only you use.

 

direct linking

Links on a page that obtain their source material from another website.  Amazon provides direct linking for their affiliates.  It is only proper to use direct linking when you have permission to do so.

 

 

directory

In reference to computers, this is another name for a file folder.  When used to refer to web sites or web pages, this is a list of related web locations (e.g., a blog directory)

 

 

domain names

The internet location of a website.  Always starts with http://, and may be preceded by www, and followed by a variety of suffixes such as .com, .net, org, etc.  Also referred to as the web address of a site or blog.  (e.g., www.mysite.com)

 

 

drop shipping

Selling products that are supplied and shipped by another company.

eBay

an on-line auction and shopping website in which people and businesses buy and sell a broad variety of goods and services worldwide.

 

 

ebook

An abbreviated term for electronic book; also known as a digital book, ebook, or eBook.  This is electronic text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book

 

 

e course

An electronically supported educational course.  Content may be delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, cable or satellite TV, CD-ROM, or other electronically based methods.

 

 

email marketing

A form of electronic marketing which uses email as a means of communicating advertising messages to an audience.

 

 

ezine

Magazines and newsletters distributed by any electronic method; most frequently distributed via email.

favicon

This term is an abbreviation for "favorites icon" and refers to a 16×16 or 32×32 pixel square icon associated with a particular website, webpage, or software program.  It is located in the upper left corner of a window or a website.

 

 

fantastico

Fantastico is a commercial script library that automates the installation of web applications to a website, and is commonly found in the cPanel of web hosting accounts.

 

 

ffa links

A Web page that consists of a long list of Web sites or free products, and allows anyone to add their own web site or product (with a description) to the list.

 

 

flash

Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to Web pages. Flash is frequently used for advertisements and games.

 

 

forum

An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site with persisting messages. 

 

 

forwarding

In reference to email, the re-sending of an email message onward to another email address

 

 

ftp

File transfer protocol; a method of transferring files to or from a web host or server

GIMP

Open source/open license software for editing graphics; available free under the GNU general license.  A great alternative to Photoshop.

giveaway rights

A product license that permits the holder of the license to provide the product to their customers without charging for the product.

 

 

guerilla marketing

The concept of guerrilla marketing was invented as an unconventional system of promotions that relies on time, energy and imagination rather than a big marketing budget.

 

 

guru

A guru is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority in a certain area, and who uses it to guide or teach others.  In marketing, guru is used to refer to a person who has authority because of his or her perceived specialized knowledge or skills.

hits

A hit is a request to a web server for a file (web page, image, JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheet, etc.).

 

 

hosting

Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

 

HTML

HTML, which stands for hyper text markup language, is the predominant means of creating web pages.

IM

This is an abbreviated term that can be applied to either internet marketing or instant messaging.

 

 

impression

An impression (online media) is a delivered basic advertising unit from an ad distribution point.  Impressions are how most Web advertising is sold.

 

 

inbound link

Backlinks (also known as inbound links) are incoming links to a website or web page. Inbound links were originally important as a primary means of web navigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO).

 

 

internet marketing

The process of selling products or services over the internet

javascript

JavaScript is a programming language that can be used with web pages in order to provide enhanced user interfaces and dynamic websites.

 

 

joint venture

A joint venture is often used in internet marketing between two or more parties to undertake a specific economic activity together.  The JV is dissolved when that goal is reached.

This is an abbreviated term for joint venture.

keyword density

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page.

 

 

keyword research

Keyword research is a practice used by search engine optimization professionals to find and research actual search terms people enter into the search engines when conducting a search.

 

 

keywords

The word or words a person types into a search engine when they are seeking web sites or pages for a specific subject (e.g., dog, german shepard, siberian husky, etc.).

landing page

In online marketing a landing page, also known as a lead capture page, is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or search engine result.

 

 

link exchange

The exchange of links between web sites; each site displays a link or advertisement for the other site(s).

mailing list

An electronic mailing list is a special usage of email that allows for widespread distribution of information to internet users who have elected to receive the information.

 

membership site

A web site that offers products or services to subscribers in return for a recurring fee.  Netflix is a great example of a popular membership site.

 

 

merchant

A merchant is a business person who trades in commodities that he did not produce himself, in order to earn a profit.  Merchants may be either wholesalers or retailers.

 

 

meta tag

Meta elements are HTML or XHTML elements used to provide structured metadata (e.g., keywords, title, content type, etc.) about a web page.

 

 

mini sites

Small web sites that provide information on a single subject; may consist of a few pages, or be just a single page.

 

 

MLM

Multi-level marketing (MLM), (also called network marketing or referral marketing) is a term that describes a marketing structure where promoters of company products are compensated for both sales they personally generate and also for the sales of other promoters they introduce to the company.

 

 

moderator

A person given special powers to enforce the rules on an internet forum, newsgroup, or other interactive web site.

 

 

MRR

This is an abbreviation for master resale rights, which is a product resale license allowing the license holder to resell not only the product but also to resell the rights to sell the product.

 

 

mySQL

MySQL is a relational database management system that runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases.  It is commonly used on web sites with PHP programming language to handle large amounts of data (such as an online store inventory) to provide a dynamic experience for the end user.

This term refers to people who are just beginning an internet marketing career.

 

 

newsletter

A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication generally about one main topic that is of interest to its subscribers.

 

 

niche

A focused, targetable portion (subset) of a market sector or subject.

opt-in

Opt-in e-mail advertising, or permission marketing, is a method of advertising via e-mail whereby the recipient of the advertisement has consented to receive it.

 

 

OTO

A web site or page where a visitor will receive the offer only once. If the visitor leaves, the page or offer may not be available again.

 

 

outsourcing

Outsourcing often refers to the process of contracting to a third-party.

paypal

PayPal is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the internet. PayPal serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders.

 

 

page loads

When a web page is requested from a server the number of "hits" or "page hits" is equal to the number of files requested.  One page load does not always equal one hit because often pages are made up of images and other files which stack up the number of hits counted.

 

 

payment threshold

The minimum amount that must be accrued before a payment will be issued.

 

 

PDF

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a type of document created by Adobe Systems in 1993 used for representing two-dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating system.

 

 

PHP

PHP is a widely used, general-purpose scripting language that was originally designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages.

 

 

PLR

An abbreviation for private label rights, this is an intellectual property right which allows you to modify a work and to claim the new work as your own from an authorship standpoint.  It may or may not grant actual copyright to either the original or the modified work.

 

 

pm

PM can be used as an abbreviation for personal message or private message.  It is similar to an e-mail sent from one user to another user on an internet forum, bulletin board system, social networking site (such as Facebook), or chat room.

 

 

podcasting

A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. The word usurped webcast in common vernacular, due to rising popularity of the iPod and the innovation of web feeds.

 

 

PPC

An abbreviation for Pay Per Click, a method of advertising in which the advertiser pays a specified amount each time a viewer clicks on their ad.

 

 

PPL

An abbreviation for Pay Per Lead, this is a method of advertising in which the advertiser pays for each lead (person) provided to them.

 

 

PPP

An abbreviation for Pay Per Post, this term denotes a website which helps content creators such as bloggers find advertisers willing to sponsor specific content.

 

 

PR

PageRank is used by Google to assign a numerical weighting to a web site with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance to other web sites.

 

 

pre-sell

A marketing tactic in which information regarding a new product is released prior to the product actually being released.  Pre-sell may also be referred to as a pre-launch.

 

 

press release

A press release, news release, media release, or press statement is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something claimed as having news value.

 

 

profit funnel

Refers to a specific style of setting up marketing on a web site or blog to "funnel" customers toward product purchases.

 

PSD

A graphics file type that can use layers; useful for creating professional looking graphics.  Photoshop and GIMP can both work with .psd files

publishers

Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature or information – the activity of making information available for public view.  In some cases authors may be their own publishers, meaning that originators and developers of content may also deliver and display the content.

reciprocal links

A reciprocal link is a mutual link between two objects.  In marketing, this commonly refers to links exchanged between two websites to ensure mutual traffic.

 

 

redirecting

Redirecting an URL or domain can be used for making a web page or domain available under many URLs.  Redirecting may also be used as a method of cloaking affiliate links.

 

 

resell rights

A product license that permits the license holder to resell the product and keep all of the proceeds for the sale.

 

 

resource box

This is a term used in article marketing.  It refers to the bio box and byline, collectively known as the resource box, that include references and contact information for the author's business.

 

 

return days

In affiliate marketing, this term refers to the number of days following the initial use of the affiliate's link that a returning visitor will be assigned to that affiliate.

 

 

RSS

This term is an abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication.  It refers to a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.

safelist

In marketing, a safe list is an email subscriber list consisting of members who have agreed to receive emails from advertisers without requiring new opt-in permission for each different advertiser.

 

 

sales copy

This refers to virtually any means of communicating a sales message to potential customers.

 

 

sales letter

Written sales copy that can be read by conventional or electronic methods.

 

 

scripts

A small program written for a command interpreter (such as HTML) or another scripting language.

 

 

seo

An abbreviation for search engine optimization, this refers to use of meta tags in web documents that may assist a search engine in finding a given web site or web sites on a given topic.

 

 

server

A server is a computer, or series of computers, that link other computers or electronic devices together. They often provide essential services across a network, either to private users inside a large organization or to public users via the internet.

 

 

shared hosting

A shared web hosting service refers to a web hosting service where many websites reside on one web server connected to the Internet. Each site "sits" on its own partition, or section/place on the server to keep it separate from other sites.

 

signature

In internet marketing this term indicates your name and link to your website or other information you want people to see, and follows your content when posting in forums, emails, etc.

 

 

site builder

This term refers to software that will allow one to build a website without requiring knowledge of HTML.

 

 

social bookmarking

In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, but can also be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or by other combinations of public and private domains.

 

 

spamming

Spamming is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media and digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately.  There are many forms of spam (besides the canned varieties).

 

 

squeeze page

A squeeze page is a single web page with the sole purpose of capturing information for follow-up marketing. By definition, a squeeze page has no exit hyperlinks except the one used to process the collected information.

 

 

subdomains

A subdomain is a discrete domain that is part of a larger domain.  For example, first.example.com and next.example.com are subdomains of the domain example.com.

template

A pre-developed page layout in electronic or paper media used to make new pages with a similar design, pattern, or style.

 

 

tracking code

This refers to a method of keeping track of affiliates, specific advertisement results, or referrals.

 

 

traffic

In internet marketing, traffic refers to visitors of a web page or web site.

 

 

turnkey sites

Turnkey sites refers to a complete web site template, generally in a business venue.  A marketer can insert their domain and business information into the template, and the site is then ready to upload as a complete and functional web site.

unique visitors

In internet marketing, this term is used to refer to each new and distinct visitor as opposed to returning visitors.  This is usually indicated by the number of different IP addresses that have requested pages from your web site.

A marketing technique that encourages visitors and customers to pass along documents or media containing specific advertising information.

 

 

VPS (virtual private server)

A method of partitioning a physical server computer into multiple servers.

web 2.0

A Web 2.0 site gives its users the opportunity to interact with each other, in contrast to websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them.

 

whois

A protocol used to determine the registrar or assignee of an internet resource such as a domain name or IP address.

Popular and  versatile, this is a free blogging platform with many features, plug-ins, and free themes available

 

wysiwyg

What You See Is What You Get; a term assigned to software that allows you to create documents that look the same on the screen as they do when published
